Halloween Monster Eyeballs

I don’t know about you, but our school has an approved list of foods we can bring for classroom treats and, for allergy reasons, all of them are prepackaged convenience foods (where the labels list all ingredients.)

In other words, the days of homemade cupcakes are gone.

I am in charge of Halloween treats this year, so I’ve been staring at that list trying to figure out how I can be creative within the realm of packaged snacks. I stumbled upon a version of these monster eyeballs on Pinterest, and decided to make them happen using the Hostess Donettes and Skittles that are on our approved list. I tested them out on some kiddos who ate dinner with us last night and they were a total hit. (Also, I may or may not have eaten half the bag of donuts before I even made these, so they were in short supply. Hey, I’ve never met a donut I didn’t like.)

These are super-easy and great to make with the kids. Since the red lines look even better if they’re sorta wiggly, it’s the perfect task for little hands.

(I did have to call the school nurse to make sure the gel icing was okay to use (since it’s not on the approved snack list). She checked out the label and proclaimed me safe.)
