Bake Sale! Adorable Cupcakes-To-Go

Each January our Girls Scout Troop has a bake sale to benefit the school PTA. Kate always insists we make cupcakes, which are the hardest thing to package without ruining them. Cupcakes are quite possibly my favorite food and, even though they’re a pain to transport, I was determined to find a way to package them so they withstood being rustled around in transit, but looked beautiful on display. We got so many compliments on these, and that was before anyone even took a bite.

These little to-go cupcakes would be perfect for birthday parties, party favors, baby and bridal showers…you name it. Here’s a step-by-step of how I packaged them:

1. Bake cupcakes using plain white cupcake liners. Leave those liners on. (They are the base liner. No one will see.)

2. When cooled, place cupcakes in a larger decorative liner. I purchased these Wilton petal liners from Wal-Mart.

3. Place lined cupcake in a 9-ounce clear plastic cup.

4. Purchase clear cello treat bags from your local craft store (Michael’s or Jo-Anns for me). Make sure your cup fits in the bags (some bags are too small) with room to tie at the top.

5. Get your frosting ready and put it in a pastry or ziploc bag with a small hole cut in the corner. I used a pastry tip to pipe these.

6. Place the unfrosted cupcake in the cello bag. It’s easiest to frost the cupcake after it’s in the bag. (Otherwise trying to wrangle the frosted cupcake in gets all messy.) Get your bag down in there and swirl it around to frost. A piping tip makes this even easier. I found it’s best not to pipe right to the edges of the cupcake — just a nice swirl in the center and no one gets hurt.

7. Before you close up the bags, I like to chill these first to set up the frosting. It’s less likely to stick to the bag if you do. Since it’s cold here, I just set them on the porch for an hour or so.

8. Close up the bags and tie with a pretty ribbon. Refrigerate until ready to use!

My girlfriend brought a big pink candelabra with crystals to display these on. I didn’t have my camera, but it was GORGEOUS!
