Pucker Up! Homemade Strawberry Limeade

homemade strawberry limeade 1_small
During the summer, we sometimes go to our local Sonic drive-in daily to get strawberry limeades. They’re so tangy and refreshing, but I know the Sonic version is filled with artificial stuff — especially the red dye. That’s okay every once and a while, but I’ve been experimenting with making it at home so we always have a pitcher handy.

The problem with homemade versions is they were never lime-y enough. Never had that pucker factor. And what’s a limeade without pucker?

After almost a dozen tries, I finally figured out the secret… using the whole lime. Literally, throwing whole thing in the blender (after cutting it up, of course). The combination of the juice, the pith and the rind makes it so much better!

The down side to this method is that you have to strain it. It’s an extra step and I usually try to avoid those, but it’s worth it in this case.

Pucker up, baby!

On a more R-rated note, this may or may not be incredible as a cocktail with a little vodka in it.

Ingredients

1 1/4 lbs strawberries, stems removed, washed and halved, about 4 cups

2 limes, washed and quartered

1/2 - 3/4 cups sugar (or honey or agave), adjust based on your preference and sweetness of strawberries

6 cups of water

Ice

Garnishes: Strawberry slices, lime slices

Instructions

Using a powerful blender (Vitamix) or food processor, blend the strawberries, limes and sugar/honey with 2 cups of water. (Yes, you are putting in the whole lime pieces.)

Pour the strawberry lime mix through a strainer. Add the additional 4 cups of water through the strainer too. Taste strained limeade and add additional honey/agave/sugar if needed.

Serve cold over ice.

Makes about 8 cups. Serves 4.
