Oscar-worthy: Salted Caramel Krispie Treats

Did you watch the Oscars last night?  I DVR-ed them and started watching about 9pm so I could fast forward through the commercials and some of the boring speeches.  Because, let’s face it, most of us are only interested in the gowns and the awards given at the beginning and end (though Gaga was a nice surprise right there in the middle!)  I loved the show, and thought Doogie Howser did a nice job hosting, though I noticed he didn’t get a ton of laughs from the audience.   Why was that?  Half the time he was in the audience people were looking the other way.

Anyhoo, these were a nice treat to have while watching all the itty-bitty actresses waltz out in their itty-bitty gowns.

Holy smokes, people. I like every recipe I post here, but I really like these. I’m pretty sure they’ll end up in my top 5 round-up at the end of the year. They have the texture of a regular krispie treat but with the added bonus of salty caramel stirred right in.

Some of you will run away when you see you have to make the caramel first. DO NOT RUN. You can do this. Follow the instructions and DON’T WALK AWAY FROM THE STOVE. You’ll be fine.

These are so worth it. A perfect treat to munch on while watching starlets slink around in their size 0 dresses, no?

Oscar-worthy: Salted Caramel Krispie Treats

1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons water

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temp

1/4 cup heavy cream

1/8 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 package (or 10 oz.) marshmallows

6 cups Rice Krispies

Combine the sugar and 2 tablespoons water in a medium saucepan. Do not stir. Cook over medium-high heat until bubbly and just golden, swirling as it begins to brown to distribute the sugar. While the sugar and water cooking, heat the cream in a saucepan or microwave just until warm.

Remove sugar mixture from heat and whisk in room temperature butter. Gradually add warm cream and whisk vigorously. Whisk in salt. Set aside.

In large stock pot melt 3 tablespoons of butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and add the caramel and stir until thoroughly combined.

Add Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until well coated. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares.

Garnish with caramels if desired.
