Orange Creamsicle Milkshakes

When I was a kid, the “Ding-Ding Man” drove around in his ice cream truck every summer afternoon. He earned his nickname for the silver bell he dinged while driving up and down the streets of our neighborhood, displaying his offerings on the side of the van.

Only, now that I think about it — the “truck” was really a van and the “bell” was an off-key piece of rusty metal. Oh, and the “offerings” were a series of stickers haphazardly placed on the side of the van. So basically, it looked something like this:

It’s a wonder my parents ever let us near that thing.

Anyhoo, I would present my 50 cents with glee and pretend to peruse the offerings as if I was touring the Smithsonian for the first time. Bomb Pops? Interesting. Neopolitan Ice Cream Sandwiches? Delightful. Cookie Sandwiches? Enticing.

But these always won. Every time.

Orange Push-Ups were my favorite things in the world for about ten years.

Recently, an ice cream truck started driving around our neighborhood on hot summer afternoons. “KIDS!” I screamed with glee. “THE DING-DING MAN IS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!”

Silence. Weird looks.

But when I explained he would give us any kind of ice cream we wanted, eyes widened. Shoes were procured. A mad sprint to the driveway ensued.

Alas, I beat them all and proudly asked for four orange push-ups. And then the dreaded words:

What are those? I don’t think we carry them.

WHAT RESPECTABLE DING-DING MAN DOESN’T HAVE ORANGE PUSH-UPS?

My kids happily ate their bomb pops. I came inside, pouted for two minutes, then figured out how to make these in the blender.

These are way better than bomb pops.

Orange Creamsicle Milkshakes

8 ounces orange juice concentrate, mostly thawed
2-3 cups vanilla ice cream
5 or 6 ice cubes

Blend until smooth. Garnish with and orange if desired.

Makes 2-3 shakes.
