Easy ‘Bloody Eye’ Cupcakes + How To Make Fake Blood

This whole thing started when I found these candy eyeballs in my grocery store:

Aren’t they creepy in a totally cool way? I knew I had to have them.

That was like three weeks ago. They’ve literally been staring at me for weeks.

Time was running out. I’d been dreaming of making bloody eye cupcakes, but because time was short I decided to take a little help on the cupcakes — I bought them from the grocery store — and focus on making yummy edible blood. I found the perfect recipe from Eat the Evidence and wouldn’t change a thing. It really does taste good!

Once the blood is made (mwah hah hah), these come together in no time. I used the back of a spoon to create little spikes in the frosting to make it even creepier.

Here’s the blood on Kate’s hand before she licked it clean:

edible blood

1/2 cup light corn syrup (I ran a little short and had to use some Aunt Jemima pancake syrup too.)
4-5 drops red food color
1 tablespoon corn starch
1 – 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup (I used Hershey’s)
1 teaspoon regular cocoa

Mix the red color into the corn syrup. Add the corn starch and combine, using a silicone spatula against the bottom of the bowl repeatedly to mash any lumps.

The amount of chocolate syrup listed is a range because it will vary if you use a different food colouring or a different brand of syrup. Start with one tablespoon and mix thoroughly, adding more as necessary in small amounts and mixing thoroughly each time, until satisfied.

Add cocoa and stir thoroughly, again using the spatula to mash lumps. Let the bowl sit for a minute so any remaining lumps of cocoa or starch rise to the top, and then sweep them to the side of the bowl, mash them, and mix again.

Optional: This recipe is very thick, which is good for dripping without running off too fast. Add water in tiny amounts to thin as desired if you want it to flow faster.

Easy Bloody Eye Cupcakes
The candy eyes are made by Wilton and are in all the grocery stores during the Halloween season. Also at craft stores. My grocery store didn’t have white frosted cupcakes that didn’t have sprinkles, so I bought them, scraped the frosting off, and refrosted with plain white.

Use your middle finger to create a hole in the center of the frosting. Pour blood in, being careful not to overfill (it won’t look like a nice, round eye then). Place eyeball on top. EAT!
