Better-Than-The-Packaged-Stuff Creamy Garlic Bowties

A few months ago I made this Better-Than-The-Packaged-Stuff Cheesy Rice and you guys loved it. It was one of my most-pinned recipes of the year. So I was thinking about the other packaged products my kids love and I remembered these:

knorr creamy garlic shells

Oh, how we all love these delicious little shells. But if you’ve ever flipped them over and read the ingredients on the package…

Ew.

There’s a lot of stuff that’s not garlic and pasta.

So we figured out how to make ’em. And they’re sooooo good. I switched to bowtie pasta because I wanted to make it into a main dish (not just a side), and because my kids love those bowties.

p.s. I threw in some shredded rotisserie chicken to make this a one dish meal. You don’t have to, but it sure is easy!

Ingredients

16 ounces bowtie pasta

2 Tablespoons olive oil

2 Tablespoons butter

5 garlic cloves, minced

1/4 cup flour

1 1/2 cups chicken broth

1 1/2 cups milk

salt & pepper

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

parsley for garnish, if desired

Instructions

Cook pasta in a pot of salted, boiling water until al dente. Drain then set aside, tossing with a little olive oil to keep from sticking.

Return pot to stove over medium heat then melt butter in olive oil. Add garlic then saute until golden brown, about 30 seconds, being very careful not to burn. Sprinkle in flour then whisk and cook for 1 minute. Slowly pour in chicken broth and milk while whisking until mixture is smooth. Season with salt & pepper then switch to a wooden spoon and stir constantly until mixture is thick and bubbly, about 4-5 minutes.

Take pot off the heat then stir in parmesan cheese until smooth then add cooked pasta and stir to combine. Taste then adjust salt & pepper if necessary. Sprinkle with parsley to garnish.

Serves 8.

  1. I made this dish last night and it was a huge hit. I added shredded chicken, too, and some mushrooms and artichokes just to throw in some veggies, but otherwise followed it exactly. I have two toddlers and try to make homemade dishes that are quick, healthy and we can all eat together, and I’ve been successful with several of your recipes! Thank you – and please keep them coming!
